Common questions

How long can a puppy be left alone?

A common rule of thumb is about one hour per month of age, up to about four hours, because young puppies can't hold their bladder longer. Build alone time up in small steps from the first days at home.

How long can an adult dog be left alone?

Welfare charities in the UK such as the RSPCA advise not leaving adult dogs alone for more than about four hours at a time. Many dogs need a walk or a visit on a full working day.

What if my dog barks, howls or destroys things when alone?

Those are classic signs of separation distress. The safe amount of alone time is then however long your dog stays calm, which can be only minutes. Gradual practice absences shorter than that point are the usual fix.

Does a camera or a radio help?

A pet camera or a phone recording shows what actually happens while you're out, which is the best way to know how long your dog copes. A radio or white noise can help dogs who react to outside noise.
